Deionised water is also known as demineralised water and it is a type of water from which minerals such as iron, calcium and more are removed and therefore it is free from ions. It is the pure water without any chemicals or toxins and tastes great. This water is used in large companies that manufacture things, companies that produce pharmaceuticals and other laboratories.

One can also create this water in their home by installing a water filter that uses direct osmosis process. Though it is little expensive, offers numerous benefits and since it only has a few accessories, one can also easily maintain this machine. This water is also used in offices, hospitals and schools, where water is not safe to drink.

You may know what is deionised water and for that you have to know what is deionization. It is a process which involves chemical and in this process a specially manufactured ion exchange resins are used and it exchange both hydroxide and hydrogen ions in order to dissolve minerals and at last it will recombine together forming water.

The deionization process can produce very pure water, which is like distilled water, because non-particulate water contaminants dissolve in the salt. Also, the degree of deionization will not produce, and the process will be faster. If you use specially prepared and strong base anion resins, it will eliminate even gram-negative bacteria. In addition to that, one can persistently and cheaply deionize by electro-deionization.

deionised water and its uses

There are three types of deionization process and these types are as follows:

  • Counter-current Deionization – This process can be done by two types and in the first one is up-flow columns, in which input water enters from the bottom, and the reagents enter from the top of the ion exchange column. In the second type, the water enters from above and the regenerators enter the lower part.
  • Co-current Deionization – In this process, both regeneration chemicals and input water enter the surface of an ion exchange column and both exit downstream. When comparing costs, co-current deionization costs more than counter current deionization and is because of the additional use of regenerators.
  • Mixed bed deionization – It is the mixture of anion resin and cation and this compound is incorporated into a single ion exchange column. It contains a composite bed deminerolizer that is used as a final water polishing agent that can be cleaned before using the last few ions in the water. Water formed by this type is the purest of all other types. This type of system is only used when the company needs more pure water and it is the generated by hard and expensive regeneration.

Hope, after reading this article you have got an idea about the deionised water.
